Green Prefererence Service, a new UK service enabling consumers to divert direct mail to an online mailbox, has launched offering clear benefits for consumers, business and the environment. Everybody who signs up to the service gets their own free, private WebBox for delivery of online mail. Great News as British Gas Cut Prices by 7%
British Gas energy has announced that they will be cutting their fuel costs by 7% with immediate effect. This move will benefit it’s 8 million UK customers to the tune of £55 a year on average, music to the ears of many as the recession gloom begins to lift over the country.
This is the third time in the last 12 months British Gas has cut it’s prices, making it the UK’s cheapest major supplier of gas and dual fuel packages. This bold move is sure to apply some pressure on other energy suppliers to follow suit, in what is becoming a highly competitive market place. British Gas is also removing the charges customers pay on their pre payment gas meters, so they will now be paying the same for their energy as those who pay cash.
British Gas’s managing director, Phil Bentley, said -
We know household budgets are stretched, and that our customers are concerned about the effect the recent cold weather will have on their winter fuel bills. I am pleased we are able to offer our customers some extra help with this gas price cut, and that we are able to do this while it is still winter, allowing our customers to really feel the benefit.
The initiative comes hot on the heels of Ofgem’s warning to customers that energy bills could break the £2,000-a-year mark within the next 10 years. This is in light of the particularly cold winter we have just experienced recently, which added at least an extra £70 to average winter fuel bills.

UK Energy Bills Could Rise by 60% With 10 Years
Ofgem, the energy watchdog for the UK, is warning customers that they could face price rises of up to 60% in the coming years for gas and electricity. This stark warning follows hot on the heels of the news that the proposed Kingsnorth coal fired power station has been delayed due to the recession.
Ofgem claim that a £200bn investment in the next 10 years will be needed not only to replenish supplies, but also to stay on track for the countries carbon reduction targets. Their findings predict that domestic energy bills could rise by up to 25% by 2020, with the distinct possibility that wholesale prices could increase to such a level that a 60% rise is not out of the question.
Ofgem chief executive Alistair Buchanan, said -
Our scenarios suggest that Britain faces a tough challenge in maintaining secure supplies whilst at the same time meeting its climate change targets. These are big challenges. Consumers are already enduring high energy prices. This is why we are consulting with consumer and environmental groups, the academic community and industry to ensure any policy proposals we make are grounded on the best evidence available. Early action can avoid hasty and expensive measures later.
The current rates of energy investment will have to be more than double to meet demand, meaning bills will have to go up as the oil and gas market prices continue to rise. The UK should be looking to use greener and more ecologically sound energy, which in turn will not only cut the country’s carbon emissions, but also stop fossil fuels from dramatically rising in price.

New Green Deal Applauded by WWF and Green Building Council
WWF UK and the Green Building Council are welcoming the new Conservatives’ plan to make a bigger effort to tackle the carbon emissions from British homes, whilst at the same time helping consumers to reduce their energy bills. The ‘Green Deal’ will make low carbon refurbishments available to more households across the country to try and make a much needed impact on the reduction of emissions from the housing sector.
By 2050, the UK needs to slash it’s carbon emissions by at least 80%, with housing currently responsible for 26% of the nation’s total carbon emissions. This figure means each household in Britain emits over six tonnes of CO2 every year!
Chief Executive of the UK Green Building Council, Paul King, said -
The building and home improvement industry needs political leadership to unlock a fantastic new market for refurbishment, with huge benefits for people, the economy and the environment. The upfront capital cost has been an understandably big barrier for most people, but this type of scheme allows householders to pay for the work from the savings they make on their energy bill – and still be better off as a result. The Green Deal is a big step in the right direction.
The Government’s current methods of curtailing emissions, filling cavity walls and insulating lofts, are cost effective but more advanced methods need to be used in order to offer the greatest potential for CO2 reduction. The Conservatives’ planned proposal of £6500 per household is a great way to kick start the national carbon reduction challenge.
Head of Campaigns at WWF UK, Colin Butfield, said -
The UK cannot meet its domestic climate change targets without tackling the emissions from the housing sector. The Conservatives have hit the nail on the head by proposing to remove the upfront costs of energy efficiency improvements. Ultimately what gives this policy the potential to really deliver carbon savings, is its willingness to tackle the expensive to treat homes that require more than cavity wall and loft insulation. ‘Green Deal’ lays good foundations for homeowners and the environment.
The partnership of WWF UK and the UK Green Building Council created the Grand Designs Great British Refurb Campaign to deliver a petition to Gordon Brown. This petition calls for more financial incentives to entice UK homeowners to become more energy efficient. Thanks to the Conservatives’ proposed ‘Green Deal’, the WWF and the UK Green Building Council feel that carbon reduction will increase if homeowners are given the right Government incentives, particularly in the current financial climate. Plus with a bigger drive to reduce carbon emissions, this will provide thousands of new jobs in the low carbon construction and technology sectors.
